🐋 2023 begins with a tribute to one of the most fascinating marine animals, the whale. These giant mammals that have lived on Earth for millions of years can weigh up to 190 tons and measure 30 meters. In addition to their impressive size, they have an enormous capacity to store CO2, absorbing it from food and keeping it in their fat layers. Even when they die and sink to the sea floor, the carbon remains in their carcass, preventing more harmful CO2 from being emitted. Another critical factor is their faeces, which serve as fertilizer for plankton, an essential agent in capturing CO2 and producing oxygen. However, climate change is threatening whales, which urgently need to be protected. Learn more in ZDF’s @terrax documentary or the following Whale Poo Ambassadors graphic (@stichtingrugvin).
